Dhirubhai Ambani, the legendary industrialist and founder of Reliance Industries, remains one of the most celebrated figures in India’s business history. Born on December 28, 1932, his rags-to-riches story continues to inspire millions.
Dhirubhai Ambani, born Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, hailed from Chorwad, a small village in Gujarat. He was the second son of Hirachand Gordhanbhai Ambani, a schoolteacher, and Jamnaben.
Growing up in modest circumstances, Ambani exhibited entrepreneurial traits early on, selling snacks and goods at village fairs to contribute to his family’s income.

Ambani’s first step towards financial independence came at the age of 16 when he moved to Aden (now in Yemen) to work as a clerk for A. Besse & Co. It was during this period that he gained valuable insights into trading, commodities, and the global business landscape.
In 1958, Dhirubhai returned to India and laid the foundation of what would become one of the world’s largest conglomerates -- Reliance Industries. Starting with a modest capital of Rs 15,000, he began trading in spices, textiles, and polyester yarn.
In 1966, Ambani established a textile mill in Naroda, Gujarat, branding the fabric under the name 'Vimal,' which became a household name in India.
Ambani’s unique business acumen lies in his ability to anticipate market trends and adapt to them swiftly. He leveraged government policies, tapped into emerging industries, and expanded Reliance into various sectors, including petrochemicals, telecommunications, and retail.
Dhirubhai Ambani passed away on July 6, 2002, but his legacy endures through Reliance Industries, now a global powerhouse.
His sons, Mukesh and Anil Ambani, inherited a business empire that continues to influence diverse sectors such as energy, telecommunications, retail, and entertainment.
Ambani’s entrepreneurial journey reshaped India’s economic landscape, inspiring a new generation of business leaders. He democratised wealth creation, bridged the gap between rural and urban India, and transformed the nation’s perception on a global stage.
On his birth anniversary, we celebrate the indomitable legacy of a man who redefined success and inspired a billion dreams.
