McClendon was born in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky on November 6, 1953. Born to Joseph and Every McClendon, he was raised in Hickam Airforce Base, Oahu Hawaii and is the second of four children. When McClendon was 17 years old, three grown men attacked Joseph and nearly killed him because of the color of his skin. This led to becoming homeless in Lancaster, California for several months.
On his 19th birthday, he nearly lost his life in a motorcycle accident. The night of the accident he stayed huddled under a cardboard furniture carton while rain poured down on him.
While McClendon was homeless, somebody gave him the book, Think and Grow Rich. This book inspired him, and he began to act on what he learned. When he thanked the man for giving him the book that changed his life, the man told him to go forth and change the lives of as many people as he could. This inspired McClendon to become a motivational speaker and performance coach. One of McClendon’s main philosophies is that the quality of our lives is made up of the quality of our consistent attitudes. McClendon says that when people get stressed they generally default to anger, confusion, being upset, etc. Asstitude allows people to easily and directly access their own zone. This allows people to be more productive because our minds, our bodies, and our emotions are all linked together. Thus, if you change one, you change all of them.
"Awesome Sauce" is a term McClendon has coined to describe the chemicals and hormones our bodies release that bring a person into the “zone” to work at their highest level of effectiveness. His philosophy revolves around a desire to work at one’s most effective state, to become the most “awesome” one can be.
McClendon teaches on enhancing and developing one’s “Effectiveness Factor”. He teaches that everyone has the ability to be good at certain tasks, but what makes a person “awesome” is their ability to be extremely effective at such tasks to the point where they are successful at a faster pace than others. Effectiveness can be honed through psychological development and physical actions.
The Further Faster Success Formula consists of five steps McClendon has developed to achieve your goals in life. They involve a process of refining your goals, understanding why you are motivated to achieve your goals, taking action, checking in with yourself to ensure you’re on the right track, and adjusting what you’re doing to ensure you’re still on the right path to achieve your goals. His formula also includes delivering self-praise.
McClendon also advocates for black empowerment. McClendon feels the black community can learn from instrumental black thinkers, and wrote “Ebony Power Thoughts: Inspirational Thoughts from Outstanding African Americans” for that purpose. McClendon actively participates in black youth mentorship, and donated ten percent of that book’s proceeds to black charities.
McClendon’s unique “Tell, Show, Do” philosophy colors his teaching and coaching, creating rapid personal change that effectively moves people to take more consistent action. This philosophy also helps McClendon to coach people to go “Further Faster” with their personal and business achievements.
The Further Faster Process includes steps to becoming a more intentional and effective person through key behavioral changes. First, you must find your target. Second, you must identify what slows you down and stops you from making progress towards your target. Third, you must tap into the feeling that is hindering your progress and understand it. Fourth, you must break the feeling and interrupt the pattern. Fifth, you will fill in the break in pattern and fill it in with a more positive emotion. The final step in the process is to condition the new pattern you have developed and implement into your future actions.
